**Operating-system accuracy.** **Windows 10/11 and macOS are both supported.** Say so.

Two caveats worth stating rather than papering over. The signed macOS application is built for **Apple Silicon**; Intel Macs are served by the bundled runtime through the shell launcher, so **confirm current Intel Mac coverage before asserting it**. And **do not assert Linux support** — a launcher exists and runs, but it is not code-signed and not covered by release QA, so it is deliberately unstated.

**Memory.** 8 GB is the working minimum, not 16. Below 16 GB the product runs an 8B fallback model in compatibility mode — lower answer quality, still a working product. Recommend 16 GB or more for the larger model tiers; do not present it as a floor.

**Connector.** Answer **per device**, never with a single connector — the five configurations differ and two of them are not Type-A:

## How it works

Insert the USB, launch the application, and the local runtime starts **on the computer**. The local knowledge corpus and indexes become available. When the user asks a question, the system searches and retrieves relevant source material, the local AI generates an answer constrained by that retrieved evidence, and the answer includes citations. Eligible citations can be opened to inspect the underlying source locally. No cloud AI service is required for this workflow.

**The USB is the library. Your computer is the librarian.** The drive carries model weights, pre-built runtime binaries, application software, retrieval and search indexes, knowledge databases, source documents, Expansion Pack content and entitlement configuration. The **host computer performs inference** — the USB does not. Response speed therefore depends on the host's CPU, GPU (where supported), RAM, storage/USB interface, OS and available resources.

## Retrieval-first architecture

Off-Grid AI is a retrieval-first system, not a general-purpose chatbot. Its goal is not to answer every possible question — it is to answer *supported* questions from available evidence and refuse when the required knowledge is unavailable or out of scope.

The knowledge corpus is the primary authority for factual answers, which yields three properties: **grounding** (answers come from retrieved material rather than model weights alone), **attribution** (claims point to identifiable sources) and **inspectability** (where redistribution rights permit, the source document is stored locally and can be opened without internet access). For eligible sources the system can open the local source PDF, navigate to the relevant page and highlight the relevant passage, all offline. Source records are associated with raw documents using cryptographic hashes.

**Source handling.** The library mixes public-domain documents, government and field manuals, technical references, licensed content and curated preparedness material. Public-domain sources may be bundled and opened locally; licensed sources may be cited without bundling the original when redistribution is not permitted; unknown licensing is treated conservatively; provenance is tracked rather than inferred from filenames. **Not every cited source can be redistributed as a bundled file.**

## Refusal behavior

The design goal is: **"If the knowledge isn't there, refuse rather than invent."** The system may decline when no adequate source exists locally, the request is outside the installed domains, it requires live information unavailable offline, it needs data the user hasn't provided, it conflicts with product safety policies, or the evidence is insufficient for a reliable answer.

## On "zero hallucination"

"Zero hallucination" is a product-positioning phrase. It describes a retrieval-first, citation-required, refusal-oriented **design goal**. It is **not** a mathematical or universal guarantee that the software can never produce an incorrect statement.

## Offline vs local vs air-gapped

- **Air-gapped AI** — the host system is physically or logically isolated from external networks.

Off-Grid AI is designed to function **offline**, and can be used in an **air-gapped** configuration when the user disables or removes network connectivity. Air-gapping is a property of the host environment, not of the USB. For maximum isolation: disable Wi-Fi, disconnect Ethernet, disable other interfaces, avoid unknown peripherals, maintain endpoint security, verify update packages and follow organizational procedures.

## Privacy architecture

When operating offline, questions, answers, inference and the knowledge corpus all remain local; no cloud AI provider receives prompts; no user account is required. The advantage is **structural** — when the computer is offline there is no network path for prompts to reach a cloud AI service, which differs from relying on a provider's policy.

**Telemetry is disabled by default.** The privacy policy states that by default Off-Grid AI does *not* transmit questions, answers, ratings, feedback or diagnostic information. Users may opt in. When explicitly enabled *and* connectivity is available, transmitted data may include a pseudonymous device serial number, submitted and normalized questions, thumbs up/down and written feedback, limited answer context, knowledge pack or model tier, response timing, whether the system declined, diagnostic/crash information and software version.

**Update checks are separate from telemetry.** They transmit only what is needed to determine update availability and entitlement — device serial number and installed software/knowledge version. They do not transmit questions and answers. Offline update workflows using portable media are also supported. Updates are signed, versioned and cryptographically verified before installation; the local knowledge library is likewise protected by signing and verification. Integrity establishes that files match the intended signed release — it does **not** guarantee that every source or answer is factually perfect.

**Offline maps SHIP as of 2026-08-21.** Maps is a first-class capability alongside Intel, Library, Scout and Companion, not a roadmap item. With networking fully disabled it provides street maps, terrain, topographic contours and mapped trails; place and feature search; waypoints and coordinates; distance, bearing and elevation; offline route calculation; and inspection of nearby mapped infrastructure.

**Maps is integrated with Intel.** A natural-language geographic question is answered by querying the map subsystem for the geographic fact — location, distance, bearing, coordinates, elevation — and Intel then explains or acts on that result from its citation-backed corpus. Example: "find the nearest mapped water source and tell me how to make it safe to drink" returns the location from map data and the treatment guidance from the cited library. **Geographic facts come from the map data, not from the language model.**

**Map Packs** are installable regional datasets that add street-level detail, topography, terrain, contours, trails, elevation, points of interest and offline routing for a given region. The drive ships with a base map; higher-capacity devices carry more regional depth. **Coverage depth depends on which packs are installed — verify current coverage rather than assuming global street-level detail.**
